On July 29, Berkeley Police officers arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a June shooting that left a young woman seriously injured near Ashby Avenue and Adeline Street.
On June 14th at 11:13 pm, officers responded to the 1900 block of Ashby Avenue following reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they located a 19-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. She was transported to a local hospital and is continuing to recover from her injuries.
During the investigation, officers learned that the incident began after an encounter with the victim’s ex-boyfriend at a residence on the 2900 block of Adeline Street—where the ex-boyfriend attacked the victim inside the residence. After leaving the residence, the suspect shot the victim outside the residence when she attempted to get in her vehicle to drive away. The suspect then went through the victim’s vehicle, where he stole cash.
In the weeks that followed, detectives collected evidence from the scene, interviewed witnesses, and reviewed surveillance footage from the surrounding area. On June 15, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the victim’s ex-boyfriend: Darius Tate, 19, of Hayward, for attempted murder.
Surveillance footage also showed Tate fleeing the area with the assistance of family members. Detectives determined that Tate's mother picked him up after the shooting and provided him with a change of clothing to help him evade capture.
As a result of that investigation, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Tate’s mother: Ann Fernandez, 53, of Hayward, on suspicion of being an accessory after the commission of a felony.
On July 29, detectives located Tate and Fernandez at an apartment complex in San Leandro. After obtaining a search warrant, members of the Berkeley Police Department's Special Response Team safely took Tate into custody as he exited the apartment building.
During the subsequent search of the apartment, detectives recovered two loaded handguns and additional evidence believed to be connected to the shooting.
Fernandez was arrested at a second location in San Leandro.
In addition to the attempted murder warrant, Tate was arrested on suspicion of robbery, domestic violence, and carrying a loaded firearm.
This case highlights how our detectives were able to use public safety technology, which played an important role in this investigation. We are also thankful for the dedication of our officers and detectives, whose work led to the swift apprehension of this suspect before additional members of our community could be harmed.
