PROJECT LOCATION
The Intersection of Ada Street and California Street
WHAT'S HAPPENING
The City of Berkeley's Transportation Division conducted a comprehensive Intersection Safety Assessment at Ada Street and California Street. Based on the findings, the City proposes a series of safety enhancements for people walking, rolling, biking, and driving.
- High-visibility crosswalk striping and pedestrian signage at all four crossings.
- Chevron warning signs and reflective markers on the existing traffic diverters.
- Painted guidelines on the pavement through the intersection.
- Quick-build safety zone (bulb-out) at the southeast corner.
What’s in the Intersection Safety Assessment?
When preparing an intersection assessment, the Public Works – Transportation Division conducts a study of intersection conditions such as sightlines, crosswalk markings, vehicle speeds, and reported collisions histories. The results of this study are measured against minimum criteria adopted by the City.
The results of the safety assessment informed a set of proven safety improvements aimed at increasing pedestrian visibility, enhancing cyclist safety, and improving driver awareness. These measures are designed to calm traffic, improve intersection visibility, and enhance guidance for all road users.
