Approvals for your business location
Make sure your business can operate at the location before you sign a lease or buy property.
Check the zoning rules for the property to see if your business can operate there. If your business is in Berkeley, you need zoning permission.
The type of permission depends on your business and its location.
- Check a property's zoning with Research Zoning Permits and Zone Designations.
- Use the Parcel and Zoning Search Tool, to find what zoning district or fire zone your property is in.
Apply for zoning approval
Depending on your business and location, you may need a Zoning Certificate, Zoning Certificate for a Home Occupation, Administrative Use Permit, or Use Permit with a Public Hearing.
Go to Zoning permits to apply. You can also find forms and details about the zoning approval process there.
Before You Sign a Lease
If your business will do different activities than the previous occupant, check that the building’s current occupancy classification can accommodate your proposed business use.
If your business changes occupancy classification, you may need extra permits. You may also need updates for accessibility. Improvements in fire safety and building standards are important too. Before signing a lease, talk to your architect or the City’s Building and Safety staff.
