Berkeley, California (Friday, August 7, 2020) - On August 6th between 5:55 pm and 9:30 pm, five robberies occurred throughout the City of Berkeley. In some of the cases, witnesses reported that there were 2-3 suspects associated with a dark color Dodge Challenger (with its license plate covered up).
About 10 minutes after the last robbery, officers spotted the suspect’s vehicle (with its distinctive covered-up license plate—see the below photograph) driving in the area of San Pablo Avenue and 67th Street. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the vehicle sped-off at a high rate of speed. After turning eastbound on Ashby Avenue, officers attempted to pursue the vehicle but were unable to keep-up with the suspect’s high-performance vehicle—last seeing the vehicle around MLK JR. Way.
Moments later, another officer spotted the vehicle driving westbound on Alcatraz Avenue near King Street. Officers again pursued the vehicle, but were unable to keep-up with the suspect’s vehicle.
Shortly thereafter, officers spotted the vehicle driving northbound on Shattuck Avenue in Downtown Berkeley. When officers saw the vehicle turn west on Durant Avenue, the vehicle stopped (with a flat tire) and the three suspects surrendered.
After some additional investigation, the suspects (two 19-year-old men from Richmond and San Pablo as well as a 17-year-old male from San Pablo) were arrested on suspicion of several counts of robbery, possession of stolen property, conspiracy and evading a police officer with willful disregard.
The Berkeley Police Department takes great pride in keeping our community safe. We appreciate the public’s support and are pleased that we were able to bring justice to those who wish to do harm to our community.
