Berkeley, California (Tuesday, September 22, 2020) - Berkeley Police Department is pleased to announce that we once again have a full complement of bike officers in a dedicated full time bicycle patrol detail.
Berkeley PD was a pioneer in bicycle patrol, and in the past we have had a bicycle unit as large as 12 officers. Recently we were forced to suspend bicycle patrol as our staffing was reduced, and we focused on our primary patrol functions. However, things have improved so we are once again able to field a dedicated bicycle team of seven officers. Our new bike detail is supervised by Sergeant Darren Kacalek, and is comprised of Officers Greg Michalczyk, Corey Shedoudy, Dan Breaux, James Seaton, Marissa Pickett and Tom Stern.
Some of them were recently part of our temporary Downtown Task Force, and transitioned to this rebuilt, full-time detail. They have spent time over the past few months retrofitting our old bike unit office and setting up our new fleet of police bicycles. You may have seen them out training as they completed a 40-hour course of Bicycle Patrol Training. Their primary patrol area will be the commercial shopping districts in the downtown Shattuck Avenue area, and the Telegraph Avenue area.
We invite members of the community to be on the lookout for our bike officers, and to check in and say hello if you see them out on the streets!
