Berkeley, California (Thursday, October 15, 2020) - On October 13th at 9:51 pm, two officers were driving together on MLK Jr. Way when they saw a car speed past them (in excess of 60 mph)—northbound on MLK Jr. Way. Seeing this, the officers followed after the vehicle and finally caught-up with it after it turned onto the 1600 block Alcatraz Avenue.
After obtaining the driver’s information, the driver abruptly opened the car door and ran to the side yard of a nearby building. While one officer remained with the car along with its two passengers, the other officer chased after the driver on foot—catching-up with him soon after.
When officers caught-up with the driver (a 35-year-old Hayward man), they found a loaded handgun with an extended magazine on ground near him.
When officers searched the passengers, they discovered that one of them (a 16-year-old Hayward male) also was armed with loaded handgun (as well as a small bag of suspected ecstasy).
The driver and passenger with the handgun were arrested on suspicion of several weapon and drug related charges.
The Berkeley Police Department takes great pride in keeping our community safe. We appreciate the public’s support and are pleased that we were able to bring justice to those who wish to do harm to our community.
