Annual Shakeout event is a reminder to be ready for an earthquake
Pause what you're doing at 10:15am on October 15 and take a few minutes to practice what to do during an earthquake.
There are three things everyone should do during an earthquake, if they are able:
- DROP to the ground
- Take COVER under a sturdy desk or table
- HOLD ON until shaking stops
For those in a wheelchair or using a walker:
- LOCK the wheels of your device
- COVER your head with your hands and arms
- HOLD ON until the shaking stops
Earthquakes are an inevitable part of Berkeley's future. Learning and practicing "drop, cover, and hold on" can significantly reduce your chances of being injured during the immediate shaking of an earthquake.
Register at the ShakeOut website to get tips on planning for a drill and talking with others about earthquake preparedness.
Berkeley's Office of Emergency Services encourages everyone to join in this citywide exercise. After practicing, "drop, cover, and hold on," you can take more steps to prepare by checking disaster supply kits, reviewing evacuation plans, and practicing notifying loved ones of your status.
Please make sure you are signed up for AC Alert, the emergency notification system for Berkeley and Alameda County. We will use AC Alert to send information on actions needed to protect yourself during a life-threatening emergency.
