Starts at 8pm on June 1 and June 2 and lasts until 5am the following morning
UPDATE: Wednesday, June 3
The City Council has extended the curfew through 5am on the morning of June 5, with some modifications. A curfew will be in effect starting at 9pm on Wednesday, June 3 and Thursday, June 4.
City Manager Dee Williams-Ridley, in the capacity of the Director of Emergency Services, and in consultation with Police Chief Andrew R. Greenwood, has proclaimed a narrowly tailored night time curfew that will require anyone in Berkeley to stay indoors for two nights, starting at 8pm Monday, June 1, 2020.
The emergency order and curfew, which aligns with similar orders being imposed around Alameda County, responds to intensive, coordinated, nighttime attempts to commit commercial burglaries, vandalism and other unlawful acts throughout the City.
Berkeley Police fully deployed the entire department for three consecutive nights, arresting many and thwarting dozens of others. Yet, some looting continued even as other cities around the region simultaneously experienced similar events.
"A curfew is an important tool to help protect our community members, especially merchants already suffering the fallout from a global pandemic," said Chief Greenwood, who has been unequivocal in his position on the death of George Floyd. "We strive to keep our community and each other safe."
Exemptions to the curfew include:
- Police officers, firefighters and other City employees engaged in authorized emergency operations, and other personnel deployed by the City;
- Individuals who can establish to the satisfaction of a police officer that they are in such place for the sole purpose of traveling to a home or workplace
- Authorized representatives of any news service, newspaper, radio or television station or network, or other news media organization; and
- People experiencing homelessness.
Violation of the curfew is a misdemeanor, and violators are subject to arrest or citation at the discretion of law enforcement.
The emergency order and curfew is effective immediately and will remain in effect until 5 a.m. on June 3.
