Berkeley Coastal Cleanup
Saturday, September 18 at 9am
Shorebird Park Nature Center
160 University Avenue
You'll receive a safety talk and supplies. Parking is limited, so explore taking a bike, carpool, or public transportation (AC Transit, bus 51B).
To reduce plastic waste, if you are able, please bring your own supplies:
- a bucket or reusable bag
- a lightweight pair of gardening gloves
- a filled, reusable water bottle
Otherwise, buckets, bags, and gloves will be available for volunteers.
Volunteers will collect trash and log it with the Clean Swell App or data cards. This will help compile data for one of the largest research efforts in the world. Coastal Cleanup Day is sponsored by the California Coastal Commission.
Annual support of California cleanup
Californians continue to show they care deeply about the environment by supporting the cleanup year after year. Over the past three decades, over 1.5 million volunteers have removed over 25 million pounds of trash. In 2019, more than 74,000 volunteers picked up more than 900,000 pounds of trash from beaches and waterways throughout California. More than 14,000 Californians participated in a neighborhood cleanup during September 2020, preventing over 150,000 pounds of trash from entering our stormwater systems and potentially polluting our coast and ocean.
Each of us can make a difference every day. Adopt your neighborhood storm drain and before and after any storm, pick up the trash before it makes it into our waterways. The top 10 trash items at cleanups are "single-use" items, and 80% of the waste picked up is from land-based sources.
Help us collect trash and compile data to better understand pollution in our coastal waters. Spread the word to others and make this our most successful Coastal Cleanup Day yet! These efforts help advance the City's Strategic Plan goal to be a global leader in addressing climate change, advancing environmental justice, and protecting the environment.
This event is organized by the City of Berkeley's Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront Department.
