enforcement continues at red curbs, fire hydrants, disabled zones, street sweeping, yellow zones and double parking
While the City of Berkeley is not enforcing parking at meters and certain areas during this phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone should still follow normal parking rules about fire hydrants, disabled parking zones, street sweeping and bus stops.
The remaining enforcement prioritizes public safety, keeps our streets clean and acknowledges that those with disabilities may need parking for basic mobility.
These rules haven't changed since they were announced in mid-March, but we are sending out this message so people remain mindful that some rules remain in the new reality of staying safe during this COVID-19 pandemic.
Enforcement suspended for meters and residential permit parking
While the shelter in place order is in effect, the City will not enforce rules related to:
- parking meters
- time limited parking
- school zones
- residential permit parking
We ask that people be considerate and not park for long periods around venues that are struggling during this time, such as restaurants doing pick-up and delivery only, or destinations that we all need, such as a grocery store.
Enforcement continues for safety and access violations
We will continue to issue citations for parking violations that impact public safety or impede access to essential services, as these issues become even more important during a public health emergency. This includes:
- red curbs and fire hydrants
- disabled parking blue zones
- street sweeping
- yellow zones in commercial areas
- double parking
Street sweepers remove leaves and debris that would otherwise clog our storm drain system. They also remove oils and other pollutants that would otherwise flow down to the Bay. Street signs will tell you when the once-a-month street sweeping is set to occur. Calendar alerts can serve as useful reminders.
We will enforce prohibitions on parking in construction zones and driveways by complaint only. You can pay for or contest any citations online.
