Berkeley, California (Wednesday, January 13, 2021) - On January 12th at 9:40 pm, officers were searching the area of University Village (Albany, CA) for a suspect vehicle that was involved in an unrelated burglary, which was recently seen the area. While in the area, an officer spotted another vehicle (a white sedan) driving south on Fifth Street that sounded like it had a flat tire or was dragging something. When the officer drove toward the direction of the vehicle, the vehicle sped-off at a high-rate of speed—toward University Village.
Shortly thereafter, another officer (already inside University Village) saw the suspect vehicle crash into a parked vehicle in the area of Kinkead Way and Red Oak Avenue. When the second officer approached the collision, the driver ran away from the collision on-foot. The officer yelled for the driver to stop and chased after him. While running away from the officer on Red Oak Avenue, the officer saw the suspect drop a metallic object. After later catching-up with the suspect, officers retraced the path and discovered that the metallic object the suspect discarded was actually a loaded handgun.
The suspect (a 27-year-old Oakland man) was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run, resisting arrest, carrying a loaded/concealed firearm, violation of parole as well as weapon related offenses.
