Berkeley, California (Tuesday, September 8, 2020) - On September 2nd at 7:58 pm, a man in his 20’s was on Eighth Street (between Gilman Street and Harrison Street) standing near one of the RV’s in the area when a suspect decided to hang out there as well. After some conversation, the man walked away from the suspect briefly to retrieve an item from a nearby RV. While his back turned away from the suspect, the suspect walked up behind the man and struck him in the head with a metal bat. When the man fell to the ground, the suspect repeatedly hit the man with the bat. When others noticed what was happening, the suspect left the area. (see video of attack).
The man was taken to a local hospital with injuries to his head, back, arms and legs.
On the morning of September 3rd, officers located the suspect in an encampment under the Gilman Street underpass and arrested him. On September 4th, the Alameda County District Attorney charged the suspect (Dennis Daniels, Male, 51 years old, no address) with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon as well as several criminal enhancements.
