The Ohlone Greenway winds for more than 1.5 miles through Berkeley, offering tree-lined paths, landscaped gardens, and places to pause under natural shade. Seating areas tucked along the trail invite walkers and cyclists to take a break or meet with friends.
The greenway begins at Ohlone Park along Hearst Avenue, where kids climb colorful playground structures, dogs roam off-leash areas, and visitors tend to vibrant garden beds. Between Hopkins Street and Santa Fe Avenue, volunteers maintain three lush community gardens filled with trees, flowers, and pollinator plants.
Throughout the route, wide paved paths create an easy space to walk, jog, or bike. Intersections offer smooth access to nearby neighborhoods, parks, and the North Berkeley BART station. Elevated BART tracks hum quietly overhead while the trail remains grounded in greenery.
Berkeley’s section flows into the larger 5.3-mile Ohlone Greenway, connecting to Albany and El Cerrito. Whether you're commuting, exercising, or enjoying an afternoon outdoors, the Greenway offers a welcoming route through the heart of the city.
Ohlone Greenway Safety Improvements Project
The project will upgrade the northern stretch of the Greenway—from Virginia Gardens to Santa Fe Avenue—to improve safety at intersections, add lighting, and widen the pathway for people walking and biking. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2025, supported by regional transportation funds including a Safe Routes to BART grant.
