PROJECT LOCATION
Along perimeter of UC Berkeley campus
WHAT'S HAPPENING
The Shared E-Scooter Parking Zone Pilot will reduce hazards in the public right-of-way due to improperly parked shared e-scooters.
An increase in shared e-scooter use paired with limited parking infrastructure has, in part, resulted in more improperly parked e-scooters on sidewalks, walkways and in other transit lanes. Improperly parked e-scooters create hazards particularly for pedestrians and those in need of ADA-accessible pathways. The number of resident reports of improperly parked shared e-scooters spiked in Fall 2025.
In collaboration with the City’s shared e-scooter operators, the City is creating designated parking zones in areas with the highest e-scooter parking need. By increasing the number of parking opportunities, the City hopes to see a reduction in improperly parked e-scooters and a tidier public right-of-way.
This project supports the City’s continued effort to improve and prioritize alternative modes of transportation to driving. Launched in 2022, the City’s Shared Electric Micromobility Permit Program diversifies mobility options for residents, employees, and visitors to Berkeley
