South Cove East Dock Pier Piling Repairs

A routine inspection discovered that the piles at the South Cove East Dock were significantly deteriorated. On February 26, 2025, a marine structural engineering firm hired by the City of Berkeley conducted an inspection of the integrity of the pier and its supporting timber piles. Their findings concluded all four piles had a condition rating of “severe” to “critical,” leaving the pier with little load carrying capacity. Additionally, the findings concluded that the timber beams at the pile caps have split. It was recommended to close the pier and access to the dock to ensure public safety.

Current Status

The South Cove East Dock Repair structural repair was completed on September 12, 2025. City staff discovered some additional damage to the dock that occurred while closed and made repairs, reopening the dock on Friday, September 26, 2025.

Project Timeline

• June 9, 2025 – Final Design Completed
• April 16, 2025 – Permits submitted
• August 19, 2025 – Permits Obtained
• September 8, 2025 – Start of Construction
• September 12, 2025 – Structural Repairs Complete (dock damage observed by City staff)
• September 26, 2025 - Pier Re-opened
