PROJECT LOCATION
The project includes bus stops improvements at below intersections:
- University Avenue at Shattuck Avenue
- University Avenue at Martin Luther King Jr Way
- University Avenue at Sacramento Street
- Shattuck Avenue at Vine Street
WHAT'S HAPPENING
The University–Shattuck Bus Stops Project will upgrade five AC Transit bus stops identified below. The project scope includes new bus shelters and amenities, bus bulbs, bus pads, curb ramps, and associated traffic signal improvements.
- University Avenue at Shattuck Avenue – Westbound
- University Avenue at Martin Luther King Jr Way – Eastbound
- University Avenue at Martin Luther King Jr Way – Westbound
- University Avenue at Sacramento Street – Westbound
- Shattuck Avenue at Vine Street - Southbound
The improvements will expand pedestrian waiting areas at bus stops by extending the sidewalk into the roadway, enhancing the safety and comfort of transit riders. Bus bulbs will also improve transit reliability by allowing buses to pick up and drop off passengers without merging in and out of traffic.
The project supports the goals of the City’s Bicycle Plan, Pedestrian Plan, and Transit-First Policy Implementation Plan.
Project background
The Project is primarily funded by the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) Program, a competitive state grant program that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by integrating affordable housing development with sustainable transportation improvements. The program supports affordable housing development projects and related infrastructure, as well as transportation amenities and programs that encourage walking, biking, and public transit use.
The University–Shattuck Bus Stops Project is part of the AHSC Round 8 grant, awarded to NBB BRIDGE Phase 1, a 120-unit, 100% affordable housing project near the North Berkeley BART station developed by Bridge Housing Corporation. The Project will construct sustainable transportation infrastructure (STI) and transit-related amenities (TRA), including bus bulbs and shelters to encourage residents to walk, bike and use transit.
The Project also receives supplemental funding made available through Alameda County Measure BB Local Streets and Roads and Measure FF programs.
