Give input to increase bicyclist safety

Let us know in a virtual workshop or via email how to make it safer to bike in Berkeley and strengthen our network of calmed routes and roads.

Your feedback would be incorporated into an update to our Bicycle Plan, a priority list of projects that increase safety and reduce stress for those on bikes as well as scooters, skateboards, and wheelchairs.

Bicycle safety projects are never about bikes alone. They are often paired with elements to make it safer to walk or roll in a wheelchair while also increasing bike access to BART or AC Transit.

New Bicycle Plan reflects a changing Berkeley with more mobility options 

Since the Bicycle Plan was last adopted in 2017, the City has built 10 new miles of bikeways – four of which are protected lanes separated from car traffic. These completed separated bikeways include Milvia Street, Bancroft Way, Hearst Avenue, Dana Street, Fulton Street, among others.

The City is working on numerous projects to build out further with projects such as: 

• Woolsey-Fulton Bicycle Boulevard
• Parker-Addison Mobility & Safety Improvements Project
• Ohlone Greenways Safety Improvements Project
• Addison Street Bicycle Boulevard Phase 2

The Bicycle Plan would also prioritize studies for some potential projects:

• Extending the Gilman Street bikeway from 4th Street to San Pablo Avenue.
• A new bicycle boulevard on Derby Street between Mabel and Warring Streets. 
• An upgraded bikeway on Heinz Street between 7th Street and San Pablo Avenue.
• A new bikeway crossing on the intersection of Heinz Street and San Pablo Avenue.
• For the Channing Way and Russell Street bike boulevards, new crossings at Sacramento Street to include pedestrian crosswalk beacons and median crossing islands.

Piece by piece, these projects help build toward a Berkeley that’s easier to move through regardless of whether you’re on a bike, wheelchair or scooter.  

You don’t even need to own a bike to roll through Berkeley. Rent shared electric scooters and Bay Wheels bikes for one-way trips without the worries of maintenance and theft that come with ownership. Bay Wheels, as well as the electric scooter companies Veo and Lime, each provide discounted memberships for income-qualified residents.
