To help ensure a safe environment for everyone, the Berkeley Police Department will be increasing enforcement efforts in the surrounding area.
The City of Berkeley Police Department would like to remind residents and visitors to prioritize safety during UC Berkeley’s annual Cal Day on April 18.
Cal Day is a campus-wide open house hosted by the University of California, Berkeley. The event welcomes thousands of prospective students, families, and visitors to explore campus facilities, attend presentations, and experience student life. As a result, the city experiences increased foot traffic, gatherings, and celebrations throughout the day.
To help ensure a safe environment for everyone, the Berkeley Police Department will be increasing enforcement efforts in the surrounding area.
This includes additional officers conducting plainclothes enforcement operations. These efforts will be carried out in collaboration with California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) agents and Berkeley Fire Department Inspectors.
Enforcement teams will be focused on:
- Preventing underage and unlawful alcohol consumption
- Addressing the sale or furnishing of alcohol without proper authorization
- Identifying unsafe or overcrowded conditions in residences or gathering spaces
- Ensuring compliance with fire and life safety regulations
We encourage community members to celebrate responsibly and remain aware of their surroundings. Hosts are reminded to follow all applicable laws and safety guidelines. Parents and guardians are encouraged to speak with their students about responsible decision-making.
If you observe unsafe conditions or suspicious activity, please report it promptly to the Berkeley Police Department by calling 911 for an emergency or 510-981-5900 for non-emergencies.
Our goal is to ensure that Cal Day remains a safe, welcoming, and positive experience for all.
Thank you for your cooperation.
