WHAT'S HAPPENING
This project constructed green infrastructure facilities including bioswales and bioretention basins at various locations identified in the City’s Green Infrastructure Plan (GI Plan). The GI Plan was developed to provide a framework for identifying, implementing, tracking, and reporting green infrastructure (GI) projects across Berkeley in order to manage stormwater more sustainably and improve water quality.
Bioswales and bioretention basins remove pollutants from stormwater runoff by filtering it through engineered soil media. Pollutants are also taken up by plant roots and broken down by microbes and fungi that thrive in the soil. In addition to improving water quality, bioswales and bioretention systems slow stormwater runoff, promote infiltration into the subsoil, and introduce green space to urban environments. The plants used in these systems are drought-tolerant, native species.
