Free in-person tours will show local homes that have electrified, use less fossil fuels, and prioritize water conservation. Learn how to reduce costs.
Tour local homes to see how they’ve been upgraded to reduce use of fossil fuels and water while improving comfort, indoor air quality, and resilience.
See homes in Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito, and Oakland with all-electric appliances, solar panels, backup batteries, electric vehicle chargers, greywater systems, and rainwater catchments.
During the June 7 tour, you can learn about energy-efficient technologies, rebates, tax credits, vehicle-to-home charging for power outages, sustainable building materials, solar, and more.
Information about available incentives, contractors, and no-cost services can help you assess your own home electrification plan. You’ll also get to meet homeowners who’ve built climate-friendly homes.

Explore eco-friendly homes up close
You’ll get to choose from 25 East Bay homes – of which 10 are in Berkeley – to see features up close and talk with local homeowners. During the tour, which is being hosted in collaboration with Bay Area nonprofit Acterra, registrants can experience each residence’s sustainable features and systems firsthand.
All the homes on the tour are partially or fully electrified. Polluting gas appliances have been replaced with efficient, all-electric alternatives, such as heat pumps and induction stoves, powered by clean electricity from Alameda County’s electricity provider, Ava Community Energy, the tour sponsor.
green home tours support city climate goals
Building electrification supports the City’s fossil-free goals, the Climate Action Plan, and the City's Strategic Plan goal to "be a global leader in addressing climate change, advancing environmental justice, and protecting the environment." The City has a roadmap for those interested in electrifying their building with the Existing Buildings Electrification Strategy.
In April 2025, the City amended its Building Emissions Saving Ordinance to require property owners to make energy-efficient upgrades – such as replacing a gas water heater with a heat pump – or make a deposit with the City to cover cost of compliance at the time of sale. This amendment will go into effect on January 1, 2026.
