Bay Interpretive Training
Volunteer to help lead nature education programs for children at the Berkeley Marina.
Bay Interpretive Training (IT) docents volunteer their time to help lead education programs at the Berkeley Marina. As a docent, you will assist Nature Center staff in teaching children and adults about the ecology of the San Francisco Bay.
Bay IT volunteers receive training about the San Francisco Bay estuary, including about its birds, fish, marine mammals, and the intertidal life found at the Berkeley Waterfront. As part of the training, you will have the opportunity to experience the Bay from a sailboat. You will also receive training in instructional techniques to help you learn to work with the different aged students that visit the Nature Center.
Bay IT volunteers should have interest and/or experience working with children in a marine environment. We ask that you commit to:
- Participating in training sessions
- Assisting with at least two education programs per month
To become a Bay IT volunteer:
- Fill out the application and mail it to 160 University Ave, Berkeley CA, 94710 or email naturecenter@berkeleyca.gov
- Pay the $65 fee to cover the training materials, nametag, and one boat trip
- Provide a negative T.B. test
- Get fingerprinted (this can be coordinated with the City of Berkeley)
