WHAT'S HAPPENING
The FY 2025 Street Maintenance and Rehabilitation Project will resurface and rehabilitate street pavement at 18 locations throughout the City to improve pavement condition and extend the service life of the roadways.
Berkeley maintains approximately 213 centerline miles of public streets. Over time, pavement deteriorates from traffic loading, weather, utility trenching, and aging. When streets are not maintained in a timely manner, the cost of future rehabilitation increases significantly. This project addresses streets across the City that have been identified as needing treatment based on current pavement conditions and the City’s pavement management system.
The City selects streets for rehabilitation based on pavement condition data collected through its pavement management program (StreetSaver) and the priorities established in the Council-adopted Street Rehabilitation and Maintenance Policy. Treatments are matched to each street’s condition and may include full reconstruction, asphalt overlays, digouts and patching, crack sealing, and permeable paver maintenance. The goal is to preserve and extend the useful life of the pavement, improve ride quality, and maintain the overall health of the City’s street network. Where applicable, work will also include Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramp upgrades and pavement markings.
This project is part of the City’s ongoing annual street rehabilitation program, which supports the City’s Strategic Plan goal to provide state-of-the-art, well-maintained infrastructure. The FY 2025 project is guided by the FY 2024 - FY2028 Street Rehabilitation Plan and the Street Rehabilitation and Maintenance Policy (Resolution No. 70,204-N.S.), adopted by City Council in January 2022.
Timeline
As of March 2026, street resurfacing and rehabilitation work has been completed at all project locations. Permeable paver maintenance on Allston Way between Martin Luther King, Jr. Way and Milvia Street is still underway and is being performed in phases during Berkeley High School recess periods. For schedule details and construction impacts, see the Allston Way Paver Maintenance project page.
