We're looking for a Principal Planner, a Deputy City Attorney, an Employee Relations Manager, and others whose work reflects a portion of the many services we offer to the Berkeley community.

As a Principal Planner, you would lead the development of long-range policies related to housing, infill development, and zoning. You’ll handle policy development, community planning, and environmental initiatives while contributing to pioneering work for our City. 

As a Deputy City Attorney III, you’d provide complex legal services for a City department, board, or commission in a distinct area of law and represent the City by providing advice and counsel to City staff, Boards, and Commissions. The City Attorney's Office is routinely involved in litigation over issues of national interest, such as climate change, surveillance technology, and homelessness. 

As Employee Relations Manager, you’d represent the City in labor negotiations and meetings with bargaining unit representatives. You would also manage essential programs in employee relations, workers' compensation, safety, and benefits.

The City of Berkeley is distinguished by its diversity, community engagement, and activism. Home to the University of California’s flagship campus, Berkeley’s population is highly educated, diverse, and engaged. The City lies on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay and is sheltered by rolling hills on its eastern border. Berkeley spans 10 square miles with 118,000 residents.

Public transportation is well developed and reliable, with three Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stations in Berkeley. The City of Berkeley lies in Alameda County and operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City is divided into eight districts, each electing one representative to the City Council. The eight-member City Council serves four-year terms, and a mayor is elected at large – also on a four-year term.

The City Council appoints a City Manager, who serves as the Chief Executive of the City. Berkeley provides a comprehensive range of municipal services to its population, many of which are not typically offered by cities.

The City of Berkeley’s Health, Housing, and Community Services Department provides public, mental, and environmental health services. The City also offers its own residential and commercial solid waste collection, recycling, and disposal service. The City’s Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront Department offers a number of summer camps and operates a 1,000-berth marina.
