PROJECT LOCATION
Intersection of Warring Street and Derby Street (Zachary's Corner)
WHAT'S HAPPENING
The intersection of Warring and Derby Streets is a high-injury corner. From 2011 until August 2025, there have been 15 reported collisions at this corner (according to data from the Berkeley Police Department’s Transparency Hub, 2011-2025). Since 2011, there has been two reported collisions involving a pedestrian with one resulting in a serious injury. The intersection is located on the City's High-Injury Street network.
The intersection is named Zachary’s Corner in honor of Zachary Cruz, a five-year-old child who was walking northbound in the east crosswalk of the intersection with his teacher and other students in February 2009 when he was struck by a truck turning left from southbound Warring Street onto eastbound Derby Street. He died at the scene of the collision.

The project includes the planning, community outreach, and design of safety improvements at Zachary's Corner. The project also includes a safety and operations evaluation of the nearby area.
