Renew online, in person, or by mail; existing permits expire June 30, 2025. Use online portal to also buy 1-day visitor passes.
Berkeley residents who own a car and live in areas requiring residential parking permits can quickly renew their permits or sign up for a new one online.
These permits, which are tracked by license plates and not a sticker, allow residents in designated areas to park their cars close to home for more than two hours during the posted enforcement hours. Residents who do not renew their permit could get a ticket starting July 1.
Permit holders who do not renew their permits by June 30 will need to submit a completely new permit application, along with a photo ID and current vehicle registration.
While residents can also renew by mail or in person, the easiest and fastest way to renew or apply for a permit is via the online parking permit portal.
renew or apply online
Residents with an existing permit should have received a renewal notice letter by mail with instructions. Current permit holders can use their login information to renew parking permits on the portal.
Some may need to use a link code from their renewal letter to renew their permits. If you lost the letter, request the code by calling 311 from inside Berkeley city limits or (510) 981-2489 from anywhere.
As you renew, if you notice incorrect information, such as the wrong Residential Preferential Parking (RPP) area, use the online portal to apply for a new permit instead of renewing. Residents whose permits are labeled "suspended" in the online portal must re-apply for a new permit to verify residency.
Online renewal applications will be approved in 5-7 business days. Those who renewed online will receive emails confirming application submission and approval.
Permits are only valid once an application is approved and the $66 payment has been received.

purchasing options for short-term visitor permits
Residents in RPP zones can purchase visitor parking permits for their guests staying more than two hours. Purchase requires a government-issued photo identification and proof of Berkeley residency. You do not need to have an RPP permit yourself to buy a visitor permit.
Use our parking permit portal to purchase one-day digital visitor permits. These permits are valid for 24 hours from the time of activation. You can activate up to five digital one-day passes at one time.
Hangtag visitor permits for a single day or 14 consecutive days can be purchased in person at the Customer Service Center.
enforced through license plates, not stickers
Once your application has been approved, your license plate will be your permit. You will not receive a sticker in the mail.
Parking enforcement officers have been using license plate readers in Berkeley since 2016. Violation data is kept for one year. Our privacy policy is that no data is kept for more than 30 days unless we act, such as through a citation or violation found. Be sure to renew your permit online, by mail, or in person by June 30, 2025.
