PROJECT LOCATION
Adeline Street from Ashby Avenue to southern City limits
WHAT'S HAPPENING
The Adeline Transportation Improvements Project (ATIP) will create a long-term concept plan to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, transit operations, parking and loading, and public space along Adeline Street from Ashby Avenue to the Berkeley–Oakland border. It builds on the 2020 Adeline Corridor Specific Plan and incorporates lessons learned from the Adeline Quick Build, ensuring that community priorities, data, and design testing directly inform the permanent improvements.
The ATIP connects the Adeline Street Improvements north of Ashby Avenue to Oakland’s Martin Luther King Jr. Way Complete Streets Project to the south, closing a key gap in the regional bicycle and pedestrian network. It also supports the Ashby BART Transit-Oriented Development project, incorporates the Adeline at Ashby BART Conceptual Design approved by Council in 2022, and aligns with the City’s Transit-First Policy.
Adeline Street is a Vision Zero High Injury Street and has been identified as one of the top ten street segments in Berkeley in need of pedestrian safety treatments by the Pedestrian Plan. ATIP will explore options such as realigning major intersections, reimagining the Ashby BART Plaza, and making Adeline Quick Build elements permanent to improve safety, create public open space, and strengthen connections to transit.
