Summer Marine Biology and Boating Programs
Register your child for summer programs in marine biology, boating, or canoeing at the Berkeley Marina.
Summer Marine Biology and Boating Programs are not being offered in summer 2022. For summer fun at the Berkeley waterfront, check out the Berkeley Day Camp instead.
The City of Berkeley runs summer recreation programs for children aged 5-16 out of the Berkeley Marina’s Shorebird Nature Center. Registration is not currently available, but email naturecenter@cityofberkeley.info to request updates about registration dates.
Summer recreation programs generally run from 9:30-12:00. Children ages 7 years or older can participate in the Adventure Playground drop-in program to make it a full-day adventure at the Marina.
Location: Shorebird Park Nature Center, 160 University Ave. Berkeley Marina, 94710
Marine Biology
- Length: 3 half-days
- Ages: 5-16 years old
The Marine Biology program is perfect for young explorers who want to learn more about the world around them. The program is run by naturalist staff and involves class time in the Nature Center as well as outdoor hands-on exploration of the rocky shore, dock and pier habitats. Youth will use microscopes and marine sampling equipment to identify local plants and animals.
Canoeing
- Length: 3 half-days
- Ages: 9-16 years old
- Note: To participate in the canoeing program, you must get a water safety instructor to assess your child’s swimming ability and complete the proof of swim ability form.
Three days of canoeing fun! We will learn basic canoeing strokes as we paddle in shorebird cove and in the Berkeley Marina's harbor basin. We will even practice a canoe over canoe rescue. All children will wear personal flotation devices we provide and will be supervised by leaders with a first aid and CPR certification.
Boating

- Ages: 9-16 years old
- Note: To participate in the canoeing program, you must get a water safety instructor to assess your child’s swimming ability and complete the proof of swim ability form.
We spend one day each canoeing, paddling a dragon boat, sailing on a large sail boat and on a small sail boat. All children will wear personal flotation devices we provide and will be supervised by leaders with a first aid and CPR certification.
